It’s been a game which has been dreamt by Kojima and consumers alike where everything matters: every blade of glass helps you camouflage a little better, every sound can attract soldiers, every shadow is there to be hidden in. As for stealth, it is by far and away the best there is. MGSV:TPP follows the structure of Peace Walker where there is an emphasis on recruiting members to your personal army, Diamond Dogs (yes, the same name as David Bowie’s) upon other similar structural similarities such as the fulton device. The newest – and perhaps the last – installment blows away competition in the latter trait but falls short (in comparison with the dazzling treats found in other MGS games, namely Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid 3) in the other three traits, yet the game itself is undoubtedly up there with the best in the series, the best in the genre and best in the gaming industry which speaks volumes of how great the gameplay is.

Does it deliver? Hell yes but not in some of the ways you’d expect.Īs I mentioned previously, the series is defined by four distinctive traits: plot, cutscenes, bosses and gameplay. Going into Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (MGSV:TPP) after the short but great Ground Zeroes, the hype and expectation was as big as it has ever been, especially due to the problems with Kojima and Konami.

Anyway of the two Portable Ops is the underrated/unpopular one and it doesn't deserve it either. The Metal Gear series is known for many things, namely its wacky storyline, its long and cinematic cutscenes, its impeccable gameplay and incredible bosses, all of which has made Metal Gear Solid one of the biggest and most successful gaming franchises in history. I enjoyed dragging chosen people to the exit rather than fultoning everything in sight for example and think it was overall cooler and more challenging though level design was again the weakest aspect. I also really liked Portable Ops personally and think it should have had a sequel (MGSV is Peace Walker sequel basically).

Alas the full thing didn't turn out as good (but still better than MGSV comparatively). Similar to Ground Zero before Phantom Pain. The demo was crazy good and promising too, played it endlessly and enjoyed the cool details and imagined what the full experience would be like. Still it was a very enjoyable Metal Gear romp. They kinda went all out with the cool shit you could get/do and the only challenge became the extra bosses with waaaaaaaay too much HP that you just had to repeat missile fire at and what not which was boring rather than challenging. I liked it, it's just the mechanics/systems in play made it super easy with the given level/encounter design. It's funny, the story in MGS4 was too bloated, and the story in MGSV was too little. The weapon-collecting, soldier-collecting and base building was addicting as hell, and the story was solid because of how simple the narrative was (that was a big relief after MGS4). I loved the audio tapes and various extras, which helped flesh out it's colorful supporting cast. What I like most, is that Kojima finally gave his players the courtesy of allowing us to experience his story in bite-sized pieces instead of being forced (with a few exceptions) to watch 25-minute monologues. It's amazing how much they were able to cram into this game, on a handheld device that came out in 2004. It's like the perfect Single-player handheld game and the perfect Multiplayer handheld game in one. The mission structure works great for on-the-go play, Co-Op has never given me a single problem and has always been great fun, the trading system is strict and fair and when all is said and done, deathmatch with your friend just for the lols. Crazy deep and addictive single player campaign, what grinding tendencies it has is just buried under the depth of what it serves, actual encouragement to go outside to improve your lot via wifi over 100 side missions and packed full of secrets and easter eggs (it has the best unlockables and goofiness of any mgs game).

I think given the atrocious design of the PSP it's as perfect as a PSP game can be. However, among MGS fans, the game tends to get ragged upon. It's pretty popular among the PSP community, being consistently ranked as one of the best games on that system, and it's the 3rd highest rated PSP game on metacritic. When I used to lurk on NeoGaf, I was shocked at some of the outright loathing Peace Walker received.
